Here's how to tackle this specific puzzle:
The secret is to work out how you can possibly prevent all of the top-right quarter of the puzzle from having any shaded 2x2 areas. The area between the five clues in the top-right quarter must be reached, which can only be done by three of the clues, and then the 2x2 at the extreme top-right must be reached too. Once you experiment a bit, you'll see there is only one way to complete this area, and the rest of the top of the grid. (However, there was definitely a moment when I was re-solving this just now when I wondered how on earth it was possible to fulfil that!). The remainder is then forced, working clockwise around the grid.
