Not sure if I was being stupid, but had to do trial and error in the bottom left corner

I gave up. I'm sure there must be some trick to doing kakuros that I don't know. I always struggle with them

There might be a better way, but here's what I did...

Let's assume you've got this far: https://imgur.com/I1YSVWk. Look at the two blanks squares in the "25" column.
* They obviously can't be 3 or 8.
* They can't be 9 because the 16 and 23 to the right both need a 9 somewhere (this is kind of a "mini X-Wing").
* They can't be 1, 2 or 4 because then the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 6th squares would sum to 10, leaving 19 or 20 for the remaining two squares which is too large.
* In the 29 row, the blank square can't be 7 because that would force the 3rd, 4th and 5th squares to sum to 24, leaving only 5 for the remaining three squares, which is too small!

That leaves 5 or 6 for the first square and 5, 6 or 7 for the second. If the second was 5 or 6, that would force these two squares to sum to 11, meaning the square above (in the 7 row) would need to be 3 which isn't allowed. Therefore the second square must be 7. The rest is then easy!

(Edit: Updated the image after missing some obvious numbers in the RH corner.)

Just wanted to say what an excellent explanation of that bottom-left corner you have posted! Thanks!

Thank you Pseudo, that helped a lot. I think it was the "mini X-wing" that had me stumped. I completed the puzzle in almost a third of my original time. (Still nowhere near as quick as you though!)

Just the sort of discussion I enjoy and hope for, thank you everyone, especially Pseudo. I often find Kakuro far from easy for some reason and this helps.

Key

  • A yellow/light blue highlight in the time distribution charts highlights your time, where relevant.
  • Rating scores out of 10.0 show the average difficulty rating chosen by users, where 1.0 is "Easy" and 10.0 is "Hard".
  • If a puzzle is opened more than once, including by loading from a saved position, then this is potentially a significant aid so it is listed as being completed with 'multiple sessions' for the purpose of the best time/average rating displays above.
  • Minor aid is defined as no more than one use of 'Check solution' when incomplete and/or no more than one use of 'Check solution' when wrong; and/or using highlighting aids (show repeated digits, show broken inequalities and show valid/invalid placements [slitherlink] only). Major aid is any and all other use of the solving aids except for 'show wrong'.
