We've had 15 6x6 jigsaw killers recently and only 1 9x9 as long ago as June 15th!!!:)

Oh yes, they've run out... I need to upload some more. Same for Killer Sudoku-X 9x9 and Skyscraper 6x6. Thanks for the nudge!

I also noticed that Calcudocus were almost always plain Calcudocus recently - very few other subtypes. But I guess I compare that to last November when Calcudocus were out.... but I don't really mind.

Another observation: When Hitoris and Nurikabes were replenished, they both showed up almost every second day constantly. Now that's down to about every 4 days - very unlikely while less other puzzles are in rotation...

(and I don't really miss Jigsaw Killers, because I tend to fail doing these)

That's just coincidence about the hitori and nurikabe distribution - or in fact if that's true then it's probably because kakuro were missing for a bit, so they showed up more often because of that.

More generally, I find I much prefer having 6 puzzles a day so I don't plan to go back to 4 puzzles a day. You've more chance of finding the puzzle you want to solve this way.

Gareth, regarding the daily puzzle selection, I was wondering just how much control do you have over the selection process? Can you gauge a puzzle's difficulty in advance?
I find the selection sometimes a bit uneven. E.g., on the 17th and 19th, the cumulative average solution time for the six puzzles is around 90 minutes each, while today (28th) it's less than 30 minutes.

Hi winterer,
I can gauge difficulty in advance pretty accurately (although more so for some types than others) but I don't currently use this information, so the selection is essentially random (unless I intervene). I suppose particularly if you plan to do all or most of the puzzles then that's a valid concern you raise, which I have never given much consideration to. I think generally even without assessing difficulty of individual puzzles there are clearly significantly varying average solve times for different types and sizes of puzzle, so perhaps that's probably something I should consider when/if I eventually rewrite the site. Perhaps even just forcing a minimum of one smaller/easier puzzle every day would be an improvement.

Key

  • A yellow/light blue highlight in the time distribution charts highlights your time, where relevant.
  • Rating scores out of 10.0 show the average difficulty rating chosen by users, where 1.0 is "Easy" and 10.0 is "Hard".
  • If a puzzle is opened more than once, including by loading from a saved position, then this is potentially a significant aid so it is listed as being completed with 'multiple sessions' for the purpose of the best time/average rating displays above.
  • Minor aid is defined as no more than one use of 'Check solution' when incomplete and/or no more than one use of 'Check solution' when wrong; and/or using highlighting aids (show repeated digits, show broken inequalities and show valid/invalid placements [slitherlink] only). Major aid is any and all other use of the solving aids except for 'show wrong'.
