Clicks not responding

Does anybody else have an issue with clicks not registering on a square and so you enter a value in the wrong cell? (I'm using Chrome). Often times I have to click in my new target cell two or even three times to get a response (like there is a delay, perhaps). Has anybody identified a browser that is immune to this?

I'm sorry you're having problems. I would suspect there is a problem with touch events interfering. Can you confirm what interface you see when you open the puzzle - do you have a keypad on the right of the player or do you see all the assistance and aid options (like those that you can see in the example windows in the instructions section)?

If you can confirm I will upload a fix by switching the method used to detect touch devices. You don't have a touchscreen do you?

In the meantime, you might try Internet Explorer - it has different touch support.

I don't use a touch interface. Just a mouse and keyboard. The puzzle screen that pops up doesn't have any keypad visible on the right, although there is a button to expose it.

Okay, thanks. I'm both pleased and disappointed at the same time that that wasn't the explanation! :)

Would you mind clicking here and pasting into the comment box what appears?

For example, I see this:
tablet tier: 0
iphone tier: 0
uagent: mozilla/5.0 (windows nt 6.2; wow64) applewebkit/537.36 (khtml, like gecko) chrome/27.0.1453.110 safari/537.36
android phone: 0
iphone: 0
ipad: 0
ipod: 0
android tablet: 0

If any of those show as '1' then that would be very useful to know. But I suspect your results will be almost identical to mine, in which case I will be stumped.

Can you describe how to trigger the effect? So you open a puzzle, click on a cell and it does not always go green immediately with a single click? Or the first cell does, but subsequent squares you click on don't always go on the first click? If you press the space bar, does it toggle green/blue reliably? What if you click on the solution/pencilmarks radio buttons at top-right - do they work reliably?

When you open a Hitori, Hanjie or Nurikabe, does the right mouse button have the same problem, and if not then does the left mouse button still have the problem in those players?

Thanks!

When I open the puzzle, the first click always responds properly, and every keyboard command responds well. Arrow keys show no lag at all in navigating the puzzle. The mouse functions in a Hitori show no problem whatsoever. When I most notice it is as I'm finishing a solution and I'm rapidly moving around the puzzle to fill in the final answers. The sequence is: click, enter the value, click on the next cell (and it may not respond the first time). If it doesn't then I end up inserting the next value in the last cell I clicked.

Thanks for that. If there is no delay on keyboard handling then it is presumably the case that for some reason the browser is getting multiple events rather than single ones and it is then toggling the square on and off - because if you click a second time it toggles it. However if you click quickly you get a double-click so it isn't thinking the mouse is clicking twice, but rather not handling the event properly.

I've only seen this behaviour on Mobile Chrome where it sends both touch and click events but not in a consistent order and so the behaviour appears random. It shouldn't happen on a desktop browser without touch though, so I'm a bit confused about that because when the player registers touch handlers it also changes to the keypad view - so if that's not happening for you then there's no chance of touch and click confusion.

It's interesting you don't have this problem in the square shading puzzles - I'll have to have a good look at the events code and see if I can see any possible reason for that. It's quite complex because the server generates thousands of different combinations of javascript depending on a whole host of factors.

Does it work correctly in Internet Explorer? If it does, then what about Firefox?

I've tested some with IE... I'm not sure, but I think it occurs less often with IE (at first I thought not at all, but then I started noticing a few instances). I'm sorry, but I've sworn off firefox. Thanks for looking into it.

Okay, thanks for checking for me. It looks like a special test page is the only way to go on this, then, because it sounds like you have an issue I haven't come across before.

If anyone else reading this has had something similar, please let me know!

Gareth
