carlotes Daily subscriber Rated puzzle: Hard Completion time: 38:11
145 people (so far) have tried to make this puzzle. Have completed 59, and 86 have not been able to finish. It would not be possible to take into account this fact, for the rating of the puzzle?

I've noticed this too, carlotes. Very often with some of the more tricky puzzles there are many who do not complete them. We don't know, of course, if they are still struggling to finish! Various anomalies arise when you try to provide statistics and it seems there are always exceptions, discrepancies etc. it is just the way it is and different people interpret results differently, like politicians for example......:) Here of course Gareth is beyond reproach!!

hehe ... Elisabeth, I thought you were going to answer anything and I do not have disappointed, because I know that this matter you like. It is very difficult to reach agreement on the subject, and perhaps what I can throw at fault is the rating given by Mr. Gareth (before anyone solve it, of course). Warm greetings, Elisabeth !!

What I find interesting: I was able to finish this puzzle as a non-paying member, but now it's not available for me anymore. Maybe some people could not send the finish information because it was changed to members only? It was not an easy one, that's for sure - because at one point you had to find the only one square to go on. But it's not a tricky one, because you didn't need advanced techniques.

Hi carlotes; I don't think Gareth gives any rating for puzzles, it is all done by rules he has set. The rating then comes automatically once we start solving. There will always be people who dispute results, in other words "you can't please everyone all the time!" I didn't think this puzzle was ever available for non payers, JoergWausW, so that's a mystery:)

No, it was, but I swapped it over to the Hanjie an hour or two ago. I didn't think that stopped people who'd already played it from replaying or finishing but by the sound of it I'm wrong. In which case oops and I had better change that (or not do that again. :) ).
Yes, ratings are from solvers only. I'd rate most puzzles harder than shown myself.

I don't know whether finishing results are still being submitted after you swap the free-status - all I know is that I can't start it again. My result is still shown on the stat page, but not in the puzzle list.
As far as the rating goes: People who used solving aids probably tend to rate them easier as they are. Interesting though that someone who solved it using help in less than 2 minutes, gives it a "hard" rating. Sometimes I wonder about the best one session times - they seem too small for my taste. To solve this one in way less than 10 minutes (right column)? - but I usually don't guess or trial&error, but I try to use logic only...

Oh, and there is a glitch in the statistics:
It says for me: "playable 196, solved 196", but I solved 197 of those puzzles in the list right now.

Hi JoergWausW, That'll be because that puzzle's no longer playable for you, but thanks for pointing it out!

Yes, I just wanted to point it out - I knew, that the reason for this "wrong" number is not the database, but the programming - I didn't mention it correctly.
Another thing I noticed: When I started doing your puzzles there were always more than 200 playable free puzzles available (like 202). Now we're down to 195. That's totally ok with me and I won't complain about it - I guess you want to ajust the number to an average "every second day", so I expect it to drop down to 187 or 188. Just letting you know that I (kind of sadly) noticed, and I'd be happy if the number went up again. (And I asked my wife for a Christmas gift here, but she's right: I spend enough time with puzzles on the computer already. I'll retire in like 30 years, so please keep up your site until then :-).

Hi pisti, Oops - that's for the same reason as above, because I changed to a different free puzzle. I think I'll just make it free as well, then you will be able to open your saved game again. :)

LOVED this one... at first I was very confused, but then things started clicking into place. It ended up not being hard, but still required brain power. Kudos :D

It took me more than two hours... I made a wrong start. Beautiful!
Interesting point here. Maybe rating for those who gave up or has not finished after 24 hours of the start could be set to hard automatically, for more accurate difficulty rating. Of course whenever they finish it, they could overwrite the auto-rating with their own evaluation.

Key
A yellow/light blue highlight in the time distribution charts highlights your time, where relevant.
Rating scores out of 10.0 show the average difficulty rating chosen by users, where 1.0 is "Easy" and 10.0 is "Hard".
If a puzzle is opened more than once, including by loading from a saved position, then this is potentially a significant aid so it is listed as being completed with 'multiple sessions' for the purpose of the best time/average rating displays above.
Minor aid is defined as no more than one use of 'Check solution' when incomplete and/or no more than one use of 'Check solution' when wrong; and/or using highlighting aids (show repeated digits, show broken inequalities and show valid/invalid placements [slitherlink] only). Major aid is any and all other use of the solving aids except for 'show wrong'.
It was not an easy one, that's for sure - because at one point you had to find the only one square to go on. But it's not a tricky one, because you didn't need advanced techniques.
