In this puzzle no number can be a king's move in chess away from the same number.

In practice this means that no diagonally-touching squares can contain the same number, since the regular sudoku constraints take care of the horizontal and vertical chess moves.

So if you have a 3 at (0,0) in the grid, you can't also have a 3 at (1,1), and vice-versa.

Please also note that the 'valid only' / 'auto-remove' assistants are not aware of the anti-king constraints so will not automatically remove invalid diagonally-touching numbers.

I couldn't find where it explained that in the rules.

To solve this I had to assume that the "Anti-King" rule applies flowing from the top row to the bottom row. Otherwise there were two solutions.

Did I make a mistake?

Cheers, r

P.S. This is a nice puzzle idea.

Hi,
It applies to every square - imagine a king on any square. Anywhere it can move can't contain the same value.
So it's not just top to bottom but every direction.

amymagnet, yes I haven't added it to the instructions. This is more of just a test to see what people think of it. I have some other variants to try out too. :)

I guess Robert meant he had assumed that cursor moving applies to the king as well. I.e. when the king moves upwards from the top row it arrives to the buttom row. Like the puzzle is on a sphere or somthing. I did not need such assumption.

Go ahead with those variants.

Oh right, I see. No, there's no wraparound. It's like a chess board and uses the same rules as chess. In chess you can't go off one side and come back on the other; in this variant you don't do that either.

Hello Gareth,

Good sudoku puzzle variant. The only thing is the anti-king rules are need to be explained a bit more for start to make the sudoku. If not, the people starts the puzzle and only go to the forum when not found any clue more.

Sorry for my english

Enjoyed this new variant - similar principles to non-consecutive sudoku, except with same numbers rather than consecutive ones.

Interesting variant, though I wish I'd read the rules before I started. I'm thinking my time might have been a little better if I hadn't discovered the meaning of the "anti king" variant 20 minutes into solving. ;)

Fun puzzle, but I wish I would have read the rules first. :p Was to hard in the beginning before I read the rules. =)

Key

  • A yellow/light blue highlight in the time distribution charts highlights your time, where relevant.
  • Rating scores out of 10.0 show the average difficulty rating chosen by users, where 1.0 is "Easy" and 10.0 is "Hard".
  • If a puzzle is opened more than once, including by loading from a saved position, then this is potentially a significant aid so it is listed as being completed with 'multiple sessions' for the purpose of the best time/average rating displays above.
  • Minor aid is defined as no more than one use of 'Check solution' when incomplete and/or no more than one use of 'Check solution' when wrong; and/or using highlighting aids (show repeated digits, show broken inequalities and show valid/invalid placements [slitherlink] only). Major aid is any and all other use of the solving aids except for 'show wrong'.
